The APS team is all about being human beings and looking out for/helping others above all else. Today Dan Whitman (Field Supervisor) and Chico Guzman (TC Lead) helped out a special needs student who had lost her pod case in the sewer. They retrieved it for her when they saw the teacher digging herself. They stepped into action and showed a random act of kindness which resonated with the teacher so much she called our office to say thank you. I want to say thank you to these wonderful men who make our team better every day with their presence. Thanks, guys you are truly appreciated and always show the APS team what it’s all about!! It was a beautiful, Sunday morning on April 6, 2003. Bryan Hage, President of APS Environmental, Inc. (APS), sat relaxing with his family when he received his first call to pump and clean a septic tank at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Bryan relied on the help of his father to this point and didn’t have experience locating or pumping a septic tank alone yet. With nerves in a bundle and gear in hand, our trusty President headed to the customers site, uneasy and excited to conduct his first job in business.
Naturally, the job was not simple! Bryan excavated, by hand, in the customer’s yard for six, grueling hours attempting to locate the customer’s septic tank. Finally, after locating the tank, he stood back to observe the destruction, which now looked like the trenches from WWII.
Fortunately, Bryan learned an immediate lesson regarding the importance, effectiveness, and process of “locating” that has been passed to each employee with APS. Finally, he could pump the tank. Bryan and his father, Steve Hage, Vice President of APS, ingeniously constructed a roll-off, vacuum tank for a truck. Bryan described it as “a giant coke can on top of a car”. Though, he was proud of their first unit and ability to operate as an independent business.
Bryan stretched to pull the 4” hose from the truck, difficult to reach due to the lift on the truck. In fact, the customer had to help. Bryan confidently approached the tank. After all, he had experience with his father since 1989; however, with a much smaller pump and a 2” hose. Unfortunately, the new and improved, 4” hose and high-pressure pump whipped Bryan around and man-handled him like a rag doll. Bryan remembers “feeling like a cartoon character at the end of a fire hose”.
Freshly married, only 4 ½ months, Bryan spent every dime he had on the “coke can on wheels”. 12 years later, APS has expanded its fleet, serviced thousands of customers, and work with a wonderful group of employees.

A septic tank riser is a connection between the septic tank and the surface of your yard. Septic tanks are usually buried a few feet underground for health and safety reasons. Tucking them underground also prevents the spread of septic odors.
Sanitary T-baffles help separate large solids and floating tank scum in septic tanks and grease traps. The primary side of your tank already has one called the “inlet T-baffle,” and there is another one, the “outlet T-baffle,” on the secondary side of your tank. Both sanitary tees are designed the same, but each has a slightly different function.
The inlet T-baffle helps reduce agitation as waste enters the tank to avoid clogging. Without the Inlet T-baffle, the flow of incoming sewage would pour on top of the scum layer. This would harden to a film, disallowing new solids to settle and instead allowing them to build up on top of the tank. Before long, this would block incoming flow and cause it to back up into the main line.
Instead, the inlet T-baffle redirects the flow to enter the middle section of the tank, where waste is free to naturally separate. Heavy solids settle to the tank bottom, and light scum floats to the surface. The inlet baffle also reduces the movement of gases from the tank back through the pipelines into the building that it serves. If this happens, it can cause unpleasant odors and if left unchecked, can actually cause illness and dangerous conditions.
The outlet T-baffle blocks floating scum and debris from flowing out of the tank into the outlet line, where it would rapidly clog a septic system’s drain field. Buildup in the leach lines or drywells is detrimental to the life of any septic system, since it causes early failures and costly repairs. Businesses such as restaurants that are responsible for maintaining a grease trap have another strong motivation to keep their grease trap clean. If not maintained grease will flow through the T-baffle into the pipeline causing back ups and contamination into clean waterways such as rivers.
Mandated public health inspections are a fact of life in the hospitality field, and if an inspector finds that disallowed pollutants are entering our clean waterways through your poorly maintained grease trap, you could be hit with a code violation citation and its attendant costly fine.

A lift station is a tank (wet well) that waste-water enters, to be lifted to a higher elevation. Lift stations range in size, typically equipped with one or more pumps, a control panel and alarm system. These pumps are used when gravity cannot naturally direct the flow.
Lift stations can have a submersible pump designed to function inside the tank, or an external pump designed to operate outside of the tank. They have sensors (floats) that trigger a pump to turn on or off when the water reaches a certain level.
An alarm will sound to notify operators of a problem. The water level could be too high or too low. There could be a brief, internal failure or simply debris obstructing the sensors from working properly. This is usually what alerts our customers to the need for cleaning and/or maintenance. That’s when they call APS Environmental.
Frequency of service will vary with lift station usage and design. We work with each clients’ specific needs to determine the level of service needed to ensure their system functions properly.
The profound depth of some lift stations can exceed the maximum cubic feet per minute (CFM) range of most vacuum trucks, preventing them from pulling up heavy debris. Our trucks are fully capable of handling 5,000 CFM, while we perform multiple other tasks simultaneously. If necessary, our confined space certified technicians can enter the tank safely to pressure-wash the walls and hydro jet the pipelines.
We also carry Bioforce Pink Block, an additive product that helps break down built-up grease after our service is complete. This can prevent future blockages requiring further lift station cleaning.
